Sabres goalie Aaron Dell could face suspension for hit on Drake Batherson

In a season in which they’ve lost 29 of their 42 games and dropped six contests by four or more goals, the Buffalo Sabres have offered some pretty dismal performances.

Tuesday’s ugly 5-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre ranks among the worst.

The Sabres looked downright awful after a solid start, allowing three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 55 seconds late in the first period and losing for the ... Read the full article

Sabres’ Peyton Krebs scores first NHL goals in win: ‘A pretty special talent’

BUFFALO – The play in Saturday afternoon’s 6-3 win that illustrates the special talent the Sabres possess in center Peyton Kresbs wasn’t the goal he scored 18 minutes into the game, the first of his NHL career, or his nifty breakaway score minutes later.

Of course, in scoring twice in a span of 4 minutes, 24 seconds, Krebs, 20, displayed the supreme hockey sense and terrific skill set that make him such a coveted young ... Read the full article

Sabres goalie Craig Anderson could be nearing return from upper-body injury

BUFFALO – Craig Anderson has never had a timetable for his recovery from an upper-body injury. The Sabres goalie has experienced good days and bad ones and starts and stops over the past 11 weeks.

Anderson, 40, said he’s still working through the injury, believed to be around the head or neck area, that has sidelined him the last 30 games.

But Anderson might’ve turned a corner Friday when he practiced for the first time ... Read the full article

After slow start, Sabres prospect Arttu Ruotsalainen on tear with Amerks

For five weeks this season, Sabres prospect Arttu Ruotsalainen played short minutes as Buffalo’s fourth-line center, mustering just two goals.

Finally, after the Sabres scratched Ruotsalainen four times over a five-game stretch in November, they sent him back to the AHL, where he began last season.

When Ruotsalainen, 24, arrived in Rochester, Americans coach Seth Appert was surprised at what he saw.

Ruotsalainen had performed like one of the AHL’s elite talents last season, recording ... Read the full article

Sabres goalie Michael Houser dazzles in win over Senators: ‘He was amazing’

Forget that Michael Houser began this season in the ECHL, two levels below the NHL. Forget that eight days ago, the Buffalo Sabres goalie did not have a big league contract.

As Sabres coach Don Granato watched Houser, 29, up close for six weeks last year, he developed an appreciation for how well the veteran minor leaguer prepared himself, even as the team’s taxi squad goalie. When an opportunity to play his first four NHL ... Read the full article

Sabres center Tage Thompson to sit out tonight; Michael Houser to start

Tage Thompson cleared the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol last week and has played two games since exiting. Still, having tested positive for the virus less than 10 days ago, the Buffalo Sabres center can’t travel to Canada.

So Thompson, who has scored 12 goals this season, won’t play in tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators, Sabres coach Don Granato said.

Granato also said the Sabres will be without winger Vinnie Hinostroza, who suffered an undisclosed ... Read the full article

Sabres’ Peyton Krebs thrilled be back: ‘Just getting my stride up here’

BUFFALO – In his last outing Jan. 1, Sabres center Peyton Krebs showcased some of his best talents, creating a goal by adroitly feeding winger Alex Tuch a no-look backhand pass.

Three games into his recall, Krebs, 20, seemed to be finding a groove. Then on Jan. 4, he tested positive for COVID-19.

“I’m just getting my stride up here and starting to feel good, I want to keep things rolling and show them what ... Read the full article

Sabres goalie Michael Houser beats long odds to return to NHL

BUFFALO – Sabres goalie Michael Houser never stopped preparing for a promotion that seemed less and less likely as the years passed.

Tonight against the Detroit Red Wings, Houser, 29, will likely back up goalie Aaron Dell for the second straight game. The Sabres play four times in a six-day stretch next week, including a back-to-back set, so Houser could be awarded his fifth NHL start.

By last season, his ninth as a pro, it ... Read the full article

Luukkonen, the Sabres’ backbone during his nine recent outings, will likely be sidelined at least a few weeks with a lower-body injury he suffered early in Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to general manager Kevyn Adams.
