Sabres goalie Malcolm Subban likely out for season after having surgery

BUFFALO – When Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen suffered a lower-body injury Jan. 11, a career-changing opportunity materialized for Malcolm Subban.

The Sabres, having lost three goalies, would need to utilize Subban, 28, as their starter. The net, for the time being at least, appeared to be his.

Then about 16 minutes into his relief appearance that night, 6-foot-3, 238-pound Tampa Lightning winger Patrick Maroon fell on Subban.

The freak accident injured Subban. Despite being ... Read the full article

Sabres goalie Michael Houser dazzles in win over Senators: ‘He was amazing’

Forget that Michael Houser began this season in the ECHL, two levels below the NHL. Forget that eight days ago, the Buffalo Sabres goalie did not have a big league contract.

Sabres notes: Mattias Samuelsson looks impressive in season debut for Buffalo

It was one of those so-called little plays that was really huge. In the second period of Monday afternoon’s 3-2 overtime loss, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Mattias Samuelsson tied up Lucas Raymond near the net.

While the Detroit Red Wings forward managed to shoot the puck, Samuelsson stymied him enough to nullify what would’ve been a terrific scoring chance.
