In signing Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $9 million contract on Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres addressed a major need, adding a winger capable of filling a top-six role.
Johansson, 28, can also play center, so he offers the Sabres, who need help down the middle, versatility.
The Swede has played 90 NHL playoff games, more than any other Sabre. He just played 22 contests during the Boston Bruins’ run to the Stanley Cup final.

The Buffalo Sabres made their first notable addition in free agency today, signing winger Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $9 million contract.
Johansson, 28, can skate on the first or second line and, having played 94 career NHL playoff games, possesses more postseason experience than any Sabre.
The Swede can also play center. The Sabres, of course, need someone to pivot the second line.

BUFFALO – Four of the Sabres’ five remaining restricted free agents – defenseman Jake McCabe, goalie Linus Ullmark and forwards Remi Elie and Evan Rodrigues – filed for salary arbitration before today’s deadline.
Only forward Johan Larsson passed on it.
Filing, of course, doesn’t mean a player will go to arbitration. Negotiations can continue. Most contracts are settled before it reaches an arbiter.

BUFFALO – Top Sabres draft pick Dylan Cozens underwent successful surgery on his left thumb earlier this week and needs two to three months to recover, the team announced this afternoon.
That means Cozens, the seventh overall pick last month, could miss rookie camp or training camp in September.

BUFFALO – The Sabres have re-signed forward Zemgus Girgensons to a one-year, $1.6 million contract, the team announced this afternoon.
The Latvian, 25, was a restricted free agent.
Girgensons, a veteran of 420 NHL games, is one of three Sabres left from the 2013-14 squad that finished dead last in the NHL. Forward Johan Larsson and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen are the others.
Only Ristolainen (424 games) has made more appearances over that stretch.

BUFFALO – Last season, for the first time in his six-year career, new Sabres goalie Andrew Hammond didn’t play a single NHL game.
Even as an undrafted rookie in 2013-14, Hammond earned 35 minutes of big league action. In 2017-18, a tough campaign in which he bounced around and started just one regular-season contest, he won a playoff game for the Colorado Avalanche.

BUFFALO – The Sabres have re-signed forward C.J. Smith to a two-year, $1.4 million contract, the team announced today.
Smith, 24, was a restricted free agent.
The UMass Lowell product enjoyed a huge AHL season in 2018-19, compiling 28 goals and 58 points and a team-high plus-26 rating in 62 appearances with the Rochester Americans. BUFFALO – Top Sabres draft pick Dylan Cozens will undergo a procedure Wednesday on the thumb he injured during development camp, the team announced today.
The Sabres will provide an estimated recovery time later this week.
Cozens, the seventh overall selection last month, hurt his left thumb when defenseman Brandon Hickey hip-checked him during Saturday’s three-on-three tournament inside Harborcenter.
