Sabres using compliance buyout on Christian Ehrhoff

PHILADELPHIA – In a surprising development, the Buffalo Sabres have started compliance buyout procedures on the final seven seasons of defenseman Christian Ehrhoff’s contract, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Update: The Sabres have confirmed the buyout.

The Sabres owe Ehrhoff two-thirds of the $18 million remaining on his deal. The team faced some stiff cap recapture penalties if the German retired before the contract ended in 2020-21.

NHL Draft profile: Leon Draisaitl wants to become face of German hockey

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – In Germany, soccer reigns supreme. The sport’s popularity can’t be matched. Hockey, meanwhile, competes for attention with basketball and even handball, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff once said.

Germany didn’t even qualify for Olympic ice hockey this year.

But in center Leon Draisaitl, the country has produced one of the game’s slickest prospects. The 18-year-old will likely become the highest-drafted German ever Friday at the NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia.

Ville Leino’s Sabres career began with much fanfare

While it’s hard to believe now, Ville Leino’s arrival in Buffalo almost three years ago was greeted with some fanfare.

Back then, Leino was one of the best free agents on the market. Awarding Leino a stunning six-year, $27 million contract was risky. The Finn only had one full NHL season under his belt. But the signing proved the Sabres wanted to bring in the best talent they could and gun for a Stanley Cup.... Read the full article

Christian Ehrhoff says he wants to stay with rebuilding Sabres after tough season

BUFFALO – Offensively, Christian Ehrhoff enjoyed his best season with the Sabres in 2013-14, compiling six goals and 33 points in 79 games. But those numbers don’t tell the entire story.

Like most of his teammates, the defenseman struggled much of the miserable campaign, compiling a minus-27 rating.

In January, Sabres coach Ted Nolan said Ehrhoff was pressing. Some observers said the German often looked uninterested.

By March, Ehrhoff’s name was popping up in ... Read the full article

Sabres’ Christian Ehrhoff OK after gruesome ear injury

BUFFALO – Forget about “Hoff,” Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff has a new nickname.

“‘Earhoff,’ it’s the most common one, I think,” Ehrhoff, who needed 40 stitches to repair a cut on his right ear Sunday, said this morning inside the First Niagara Center.

As Ehrhoff spoke, a teammate shouted the nickname.

“I guess when you have a situation like that, the jokers, they always come out pretty quick,” Ehrhoff said.

Sabres upset about Zac Rinaldo’s suspension, plan to be ‘vocal on this one’

BUFFALO – About three games ago, Sabres general manager Tim Murray told coach Ted Nolan to tell him everything that was happening.

“Because we’re going to complain about it,” Murray said.
