Trevor Kuntar ran with career-changing opportunity in Rochester to earn NHL contract and chance with Sabres

ROCHESTER – Winger Trevor Kuntar doesn’t lack confidence. The Williamsville native isn’t cocky, mind you. He’s grateful for the career-changing opportunity he has earned and the belief Americans coach Mike Leone and others in the Buffalo Sabres organization have shown in him.

Kuntar, who on Wednesday signed a two-way NHL contract, quickly morphed into the Amerks’ biggest surprise this season, scoring a team-high nine goals while providing critical depth, energy and grit before the ... Read the full article

Zac Jones gives Sabres high-end depth during dynamic season for Rochester

ROCHESTER – Americans defenseman Zac Jones has already registered 19 assists this season despite earning two recalls to Buffalo and some of his most talented teammates being summoned to the Sabres for extended periods.

So, what if Jones, 25, stays put in Rochester? Of course, given his offensive exploits – he ranks second in the AHL in assists and first with 15 power-play helpers – and the rugged nature of the defense position, that’s unlikely. ... Read the full article

Sabres lose Josh Norris, Colten Ellis to injuries before and during OT win

Shortly before Tuesday’s opening faceoff, the Buffalo Sabres pulled center Josh Norris from the lineup after he skated in the pregame warm-up.

What happened?

Coach Lindy Ruff told reporters in Edmonton following the Sabres’ 4-3 overtime win that the oft-injured Norris, who felt ill, tweaked something warming up.

At that point, the Sabres yanked Norris, who had played four straight games after an upper-body injury he suffered opening night sidelined him 24 contests.... Read the full article

The Buffalo Sabres on Sunday sent center Noah Ostlund back to the Rochester Americans so they could create a roster spot and recall defenseman Zach Metsa from their AHL affiliate.

The Sabres returned Metsa, 27, to Rochester last week to make rook for center Josh Norris on the 23-man roster, leaving them with just six defensemen.

Coach Lindy Ruff said on Tuesday the Sabres, who play the Flames tonight in Calgary, wanted to add an ... Read the full article

After strong stint in Buffalo, Isak Rosen scoring in Rochester, ready for another recall to Sabres

ROCHESTER – Eight of the nine skaters followed the puck to the corner boards, leaving Buffalo Sabres prospect Isak Rosen, the Americans’ top scoring threat, with half the ice to himself during a power play.

So when Amerks center Konsta Helenius dug the puck out and fed his linemate, it felt like Rosen had enough time and space to tie his skates before he shot it.

With no defenders around, Rosen, 22, moved from ... Read the full article

Sabres’ Bowen Byram scoring goals by playing aggressive style

BUFFALO – Three minutes into the first period of Monday’s 5-1 win, Sabres right wing Jack Quinn zoomed into the Winnipeg Jets zone alongside center Ryan McLeod and defenseman Bowen Byram, who pinched in down the opposite wing.

When Quinn quickly dished the puck, the pass just missed McLeod as he charged down the slot.

No problem. Byram grabbed it in the left circle and quickly beat goalie Eric Comrie, his fourth goal in ... Read the full article

Soft hands, smarts help Noah Ostlund, ‘The Masseuse,’ stick with Sabres

BUFFALO – Noah Ostlund’s Sabres teammates got creative in giving him a new nickname. Instead of simply taking the first few letters of his last name and adding a “y” to the end, a standard hockey formula, they examined his skill set.

“His hands are incredible,” Sabres winger Alex Tuch, Ostlund’s linemate, told the Times Herald following Tuesday’s practice in KeyBank Center. “So it’s really hard to give him a bad pass, honestly. He’s always ... Read the full article
