NHL Draft: Sabres had trade talks prior to taking Radim Mrtka; Buffalo planned to re-sign JJ Peterka

ORCHARD PARK – Up until the Buffalo Sabres selected defenseman Radim Mrtka ninth overall in Friday’s NHL Draft, general manager Kevyn Adams said he was having conversations with his counterparts about trading the pick.

Leading up to the draft, Adams seemed open to dealing his first-rounder for talent that could immediately help the Sabres. He wasn’t, however, going to trade it for the sake of it.

“There weren’t deals that I felt would have made ... Read the full article

Michael Kesselring, Josh Doan thrilled for chance trade to Sabres offers

When defenseman Michael Kesselring recently played alongside Sabres winger Tage Thompson with Team USA at the World Championship, he joked KeyBank Center in Buffalo was his favorite NHL arena.

On Nov. 12, 2023 in Buffalo, Kesselring scored his first NHL goal for the Arizona Coyotes against, of all goalies, Devon Levi, his former college teammate at Northeastern.

“So I can give him a little more crap about it a little bit more often now,” joked ... Read the full article

Sabres GM Kevyn Adams won’t say if JJ Peterka requested trade

ORCHARD PARK – General manager Kevyn Adams believes he and coach Lindy Ruff each had productive exit meetings with winger JJ Peterka in April following the Buffalo Sabres’ disappointing 79-point season.

Adams said Peterka, 23, analyzed his game during “positive, productive and honest conversations” about himself and the team and said he must improve defensively and do more to help the Sabres.

“I think that’s a sign of maturity from him,” Adams said Tuesday at ... Read the full article

Offseason likely to feature trades about to kick into high gear for Sabres

In winger JJ Peterka and defenseman Bowen Byram, the Buffalo Sabres possess two budding stars under 25.

Peterka, 23, is coming off a career-high 68-point season and has recorded 28 and 27 goals, respectively, in each of the last two campaigns.

Meanwhile, in his first full season in Buffalo, Byram, 24, enjoyed a breakout year, scoring 38 points while averaging nearly 23 minutes of ice time per outing.

After breakout season, Bowen Byram wants to sign new contract with Sabres

BUFFALO – When the Sabres traded for Bowen Byram before the 2024 deadline, general manager Kevyn Adams acknowledged they weren’t sure how he would fit in their lineup.

In Byram, they saw a talented defenseman drafted fourth overall who had won the Stanley Cup in 2022. Players of his caliber who have sipped from hockey’s holy grail rarely become available in their early 20s.

Adams couldn’t pass up adding a high-end defenseman, so he dealt ... Read the full article

Lindy Ruff records 900th win as Sabres close season; James Reimer has injury scare with skate blade

BUFFALO – As his 900th NHL win approached, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff refused to give it any thought, saying he could care less.

The Sabres brought the franchise legend back this season to help them earn that elusive playoff berth. Instead, their NHL-record drought reached 14 years.

Clearly, the Sabres’ struggles throughout a trying campaign – most notably, their season-killing 13-game winless skid – gnaw at Ruff. He knows he failed to deliver.

So not ... Read the full article

James Reimer shuts out Hurricanes as Sabres continue torrid stretch

BUFFALO – Goalie James Reimer was within earshot following his splendid 33-save performance in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, so winger Alex Tuch playfully needled the Sabres’ oldest player.

“So steady, so calm,” Tuch said after Reimer earned his seventh straight victory, setting a new career high. “It’s like he’s been doing it for, like, 20 years or something.”

Actually, Reimer, 37, has been tending goal in the NHL since 2010-11, and a ... Read the full article

Sabres win again, sweep season series from Senators; Tyson Kozak injured

OTTAWA – The Buffalo Sabres’ recent victories – Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Senators was their second straight and fifth in their last six games – come with a caveat. They fell out of playoff contention long ago, meaning the contests, at least standings-wise, are meaningless.

The pressure has been off the Sabres for weeks. Playing looser surely helps them.

Still, these wins illustrate coach Lindy Ruff’s message is sinking in. While it took months, ... Read the full article

Sabres’ Jack Quinn on torrid streak, still disappointed in season: ‘Pretty brutal’

OTTAWA – In the midst of a career-best stretch, fresh off consecutive three-point outings, Buffalo Sabres winger Jack Quinn’s disappointment is still evident.

Quinn, 23, entered Tuesday’s game against the Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre on a tear, having scored four goals and eight points in his last four outings.

But in what was expected to be a breakout season, he has struggled at both ends of the ice – he began Tuesday’s game ... Read the full article

Isak Rosen knows he must produce for Sabres: ‘I need to play better’

BUFFALO – Sabres rookie Isak Rosen understands the opportunities he has recently enjoyed are difficult to earn.

Rosen, the Rochester Americans’ leading scorer, has been recalled three times this month as the Sabres deal with a depleted forward corps.

They’re giving the Swede, the 14th overall pick in 2021, a chance to showcase the talent that has helped him score 27 goals and 54 points in 55 games this season.... Read the full article
