BUFFALO – The Sabres have landed their first big free agent, signing Greece native Brian Gionta to a three-year contract worth $4.25 million annually, according to reports.
General manager Tim Murray has recently stated the rebuilding Sabres would be a desirable location for some veterans. Signing Gionta, the Montreal Canadiens’ captain for years, proves that.
The 35-year-old, a winger, has 249 goals and 485 points in 776 NHL games. He had 18 goals and 40 points in 81 games last season.
He should be a strong candidate to captain the young team.
The Sabres also acquired defenseman Josh Gorges, a veteran many thought would replace Gionta as Montreal’s captain, earlier today.
Stay tuned for more details.
