BUFFALO – Kevin Devine has been reassigned to director of player personnel, one of several front office changes the Sabres announced today.

Devine served as assistant general manager under former GM Darcy Regier.

In addition, Randy Cunneyworth has been named player development coach. Cunneyworth, Rochester’s former coach, mostly worked in player development with the AHL club last season. Dennis Miller, the old player development coach, is still with the organization, a team spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Jerry Forton, an assistant coach last season, has been named a college scout.

Barely seven months after taking over as GM, Tim Murray has reshaped the front office. Many of Regier’s men have been demoted or reassigned.

Earlier this month, Murray named Rob Murphy scouting director and Greg Royce amateur scouting director. He also promoted Mark Jakubowski, one of Regier’s men, to assistant GM.

The Sabres have also named Jason Long coordinator of player development, Corey Smith video coach and Jim Kovachik a pro scout. Seamus Kotyk and Victor Nybladh have been named amateur scouts.

All five had roles in the organization last season.

Devine, meanwhile, has been with the Sabres 17 years. He also served as scouting director before being promoted to assistant GM.

Cunneyworth, a noted talent developer, coached Montreal on an interim basis in 2011-12. He coached the Americans from 2000-08. He also played 866 NHL games, including 35 with the Sabres.

Stalin once said (supposedly)”keep your friends close and your enemies closer” so having Darcy’s old buddy close under the thumb is a good idea.
If my inner cynic is at all reliable, Nolan better make this work in a year or two because Randy is rested and waiting just offstage should the need arise…hint wink nudgenudge…
