Sabres lose Rochester Amerks assistant coach to Blues

Vinny Prospal, who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Rochester Americans, has joined Jim Montgomery’s staff as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues, the NHL team announced Monday.

In his tenure with the Buffalo Sabres’ AHL affiliate, Prospal, 51, played a prominent role in the development of some of their top young forwards, including Konsta Helenius, Jiri Kulich and Noah Ostlund.

This marks the first NHL coaching job for the affable Czech, who quietly enjoyed a terrific 16-year NHL playing career as a winger, scoring 255 goals and 765 points in 1,108 games. He retired following the 2012-13 season.

Greg Cronin, who spent the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons as the Anaheim Ducks’ head coach, also joined Montgomery’s staff.

The Blues did not renew the contracts of assistants Mike Weber, a former Sabres defenseman who later coached with the Amerks, and Claude Julien following the season.
