The Buffalo Sabres on Sunday placed veteran goalie James Reimer on waivers.
Reimer, 36, served as the Sabres’ third goalie during their season-opening trip to Europe.
If he clears, he will likely be assigned to the Rochester Americans. He hasn’t played in the AHL since 2010-11, his third pro season.
Reimer could be an intriguing option for a team looking to beef up its netminding. The Boston Bruins on Sunday waived two goalie prospects – Brandon Bussi and Jiri Patera, a recent waiver claim – so their availability could help Reimer pass through.
Right now, the Amerks have goalies Felix Sandstrom, who struggled during the NHL preseason, and Michael Houser.
Reimer has compiled a 215-177-63 record with a 2.88 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in 501 NHL games over 14 seasons.
He signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Sabres worth $1 million as a free agent.
Reimer spent last season with the Detroit Red Wings, registering an 11-8-2 mark with a 3.11 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 25 contests. He has also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and San Jose Sharks.
He has compiled a 24-15-3 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in 44 career AHL outings with the Toronto Marlies. He also spent time in the ECHL early in his career.
The Sabres, who lost twice to the New Jersey Devils over the weekend, had Sunday off.
