BUFFALO – A torrid week in which winger Tage Thompson led the NHL with four goals, eight points and a plus-9 rating as the Sabres won three consecutive games has earned him the league’s Second Star honors for the week ending Sunday.
The American compiled all of his points at even strength.
Thompson, 27, began the week by scoring three goals and four points in last Tuesday’s 7-2 win over the Boston Bruins. He recorded an assist in Friday’s 4-3 win against the Nashville Predators before registering one goal and two points in Sunday afternoon’s 4-3 triumph over the New Jersey Devils.
He left Sunday’s game early in the third period after New Jersey winger Stefan Noesen hit him in the head hit. Noesen received a match penalty and game misconduct for the illegal check.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said following the game Thompson passed all of his tests and is fine. The Sabres, who host the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at KeyBank Center, canceled Monday’s practice.
Thompson has been on a tear, having scored seven goals and 12 points in the last seven games. The 26 goals and 48 points he has compiled this season both lead the Sabres.
New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin (three wins, 1.23 goals-against average, a .953 save percentage and one shutout) and Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson (two goals and six points) were named the first and third stars, respectively.
