The Buffalo Sabres this morning recalled center prospect Anton Wahlberg, a second-round pick in 2023, from the Rochester Americans.
The youngster has never played an NHL game. His arrival could mean Sabres center Tage Thompson, who just won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics, will miss Wednesday’s road game against the New Jersey Devils.
Wahlberg, 20, has quietly enjoyed a strong season with the Amerks, compiling six goals, 25 points and 12 penalty minutes in 47 games.
His plus-12 rating ranks first among Amerks forwards.
When recalls recently thinned the Amerks’ forward corps, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Wahlberg served as their No. 1 center.
He has compiled 18 goals, 59 points and 24 penalty minutes in 119 career AHL games.
Wahlberg, the 39th overall pick, joined the Amerks late in 2023-24 after playing a full season of pro in the Swedish Hockey League.
The Sabres have today off.
