Owen Power’s injury appears to be serious; Sabres to make recall

BUFFALO – Sabres defenseman Owen Power suffered what appears to be a serious injury when Florida Panthers center Carter Verhaeghe fell on his left leg in Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss, coach Lindy Ruff said.

“Don’t really have a time frame yet, but it looks to be (serious),” Ruff said of Power’s lower-body injury this morning in KeyBank Center.

Power’s season, of course, is over. Ruff said the youngster will be evaluated again today and later this week. He doesn’t know if surgery will be needed.

While the Sabres have just two games left this season, starting with tonight’s contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the injury could impact his summer.

“I think as soon as we know really the extent and how long it’s going to be, you got to track a plan for him,” Ruff said.

Ruff speculated if the Sabres were playing beyond Thursday, Power, 22, would at least be sidelined week to week.

“He’d be out for some period of time,” he said.

Power has compiled seven goals, 40 points and a minus-13 rating while averaging 21 minutes, 18 seconds of ice time in 79 games this season.

In other news, Ruff said winger Beck Malenstyn will miss tonight’s game with an undisclosed injury. With only 11 healthy forwards, Ruff said the Sabres will be making a recall.

Update: The Sabres have recalled winger Isak Rosen from the Rochester Americans.

Meanwhile, goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will be starting tonight. His 55th appearance this season will set a new career high.
