BUFFALO – Goalie Devon Levi’s time with the Sabres organization has ended.
The Sabres this afternoon traded Levi, 24, and a seventh-round pick in 2028 to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a third-round pick in 2028.
The Oilers have struggled to find a No. 1 goalie, so Levi, who must clear waivers next season before going to the minors, should have a strong opportunity in Edmonton.
Levi, one a highly touted prospect, fell out of the Sabres’ plans last season when he spent the entire campaign with the Rochester Americans.
Former Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams, who was fired Dec. 15, acquired Levi in 2021.
After Levi left Northeastern late in 2021-22, he jumped right into the net, playing his first seven NHL games and nearly backstopping the Sabres to a playoff berth.
Levi, however never recaptured that magic. He ranked a distant fourth on the organization’s goaltending depth chart last season behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Alex Lyon and Colten Ellis.
When the Sabres inked Lyon, an established veteran, one year ago, it became clear Levi, 24, would likely begin the season in Rochester.
Remember, he earned a spot on the opening night NHL roster in each of his first two full campaigns before the Sabres assigned him to Rochester.
When the Sabres claimed Ellis, who had zero NHL experience, off waivers just days before the season opener, it felt like Levi’s days in the organization could be ending.
Levi endured a down year with the Amerks last season, compiling a 23-20-9 record with a 2.83 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage and three shutouts. In 2024-25, he registered a 25-13-4 mark with a 2.20 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and seven shutouts in 42 games.
