Sabres goalie Alex Lyon stays hot in win over Panthers, approaching NHL record

After inking a two-year, $3 million contract, Buffalo Sabres goalie Alex Lyon has quietly emerged as one of the NHL’s best bargains and perhaps the top free agent signing of last summer.

To wit: for $1.5 million this season, Lyon has compiled a 15-8-3 record with a 2.69 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and two shutouts in 28 games.

Lyon dazzled in Friday’s 3-2 triumph over the Florida Panthers, stopping 27 shots to register his ninth consecutive road victory.

Only nine goalies in NHL history have enjoyed a road winning streak that long.

Evgeni Nabokov (2009-10, San Jose Sharks) and Devan Dubnyk (2014-15, Minnesota Wild) share the record at 11 games. Nabokov (2007-08), Carey Price (2014-15, Montreal Canadiens) and Kevin Lankinen (2024-25, Vancouver Canucks) reached the 10-game mark.

Lyon, 33, hasn’t lost on the road since Dec. 8 in Calgary. His streak began the next night in Edmonton.

The American has been the Sabres’ backbone throughout their torrid three-month run up the standings. On Jan. 29, he set the franchise by registering his 10th consecutive win, surpassing the record Gerry Desjardins set in December 1976.

The Sabres, who close their three-game road trip tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning, will likely start Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

Their eight-game road point streak is the fourth-longest run in team history.
