Sabres captain Kyle Okposo returns to practice, could play soon

BUFFALO – At first, Kyle Okposo did not know he had suffered a lower-body injury. Then the Sabres captain had to take faceoff his next shift.

“(I) was feeling it then,” he said of the injury he suffered Dec. 31 in a 5-1 road loss to the Ottawa Senators. “And progressively your adrenaline takes over and you just finish the game, which is fine, and I knew I was going to be sore the next day.”

Okposo, 35, has missed the last two games. While he practiced again Monday in KeyBank Center, Sabres coach Don Granato said the veteran winger will sit out Tuesday’s home game against the Seattle Kraken.

“I felt pretty good,” said Okposo, who skated on his own during the weekend. “I’ll see how it responds tonight and tomorrow and kind of go from there.”

He added: “Just got to be smart with it, don’t come back too soon to make it worse.”

Okposo, who Sabres begin a six-game home stand Tuesday, believes he can likely return Thursday against the Ottawa Senators or Saturday afternoon versus the Vancouver Canucks.

In other news, wingers Jordan Greenway and Victor Olofsson both missed Monday’s session because of illness, according to the Sabres. Both are day to day.
