BUFFALO – Sabres center Matt Savoie is week to week after suffering an upper-body injury in Monday’s Prospects Challenge finale, general manager Kevyn Adams said.
“We’re also going to be really patient and make sure that he’s full go before we let him out there,” Adams said this morning in KeyBank Center, where training camp opens today. “But good news overall.”
Savoie, the ninth overall pick in 2022, is expected to compete for an NHL job this season. Adams said “there’s a chance” the youngster can return before camp ends.
“I know he’s begging, but we’ll have to kind of take it week by week here,” he said.
Savoie, 19, skated into Pittsburgh Penguins winger Jagger Joshua during the opening shift of the Sabres’ 3-0 loss and left the game.
He stood our earlier in the tournament, scoring two goals in the opener.
“From a playing standpoint, I loved the way he was skating, competing,” Adams said. “Really impactful shift to shift through the rookie tournament.”
