Zach Bogosian, Johan Larsson still possibility for Sabres’ season opener

BUFFALO – This morning, three days before the Sabres open the season, 23 healthy players practiced inside KeyBank Center.

So, could that be their 23-man roster for Thursday’s opener here against the Boston Bruins? The roster must be finalized by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“It’s too early to tell,” Sabres coach Phil Housley said. “There’s a lot of moving parts right now.”

He has so many moving parts because the Sabres already have so many injuries.

Right now, six Sabres are injured, including winger Scott Wilson, defenseman Zach Bogosian and center Johan Larsson.

Housley said Wilson, who appeared to injure his right leg Sunday, is seeing doctors today. The Sabres will have an update Tuesday.

Update: The Sabres have announced Wilson will miss eight to 1o weeks after undergoing surgery to repair an ankle fracture.

Meanwhile, Housley hasn’t ruled Bogosian and Larsson, who are both day-to-day with lower-body injuries, out for the opener. Housley said Bogosian skated on his own this morning.

Right now, the Sabres have 13 healthy forwards. Winger Alexander Nylander, who played seven NHL games over his first two seasons, skated as a spare forward today.

Update: The Sabres have sent Nylander and defensemen Brendan Guhle and Brandon Hickey to the Rochester Americans.

Nylander led the Sabres with five points (one goal and four assists) in five preseason games. The Sabres drafted the Swede eighth overall in 2016.
