Sabres’ Milller named NHL’s first star of week

BUFFALO – A scintillating week in which he posted two shutouts has earned Sabres goalie Ryan Miller the NHL’s first star for the period ending March 4.

For the week, Miller went 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .974 save percentage.

Miller dazzled Wednesday, making 43 saves – a franchise record for a shutout – during a 2-0 win in Anaheim. He stopped 39 shots Thursday in a 1-0 victory in San Jose. He also made 32 saves Saturday in a 5-3 triumph in Vancouver. The 31-year-old shutout’s stretch reached 155:37 before David Booth scored 15:37 into the second period.

Miller beat out Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall, who led all defensemen with seven points, and Chicago goalie Ray Emery, who went 3-0-0 with a 1.13 goals against average and .959 save percentage.

In other Sabres news, the club summoned winger Marcus Foligno from Rochester on an emergency basis Monday. The rookie sat again, however. He was also scratched Saturday during a brief recall.

Rochester announced Monday it signed Evan Rankin to an AHL contract. The forward has eight goals and 15 points in 18 games for the Americans.
