Sabres’ Josh Gorges knows hit looks ugly; Ryan O’Reilly earns day off

BUFFALO – Some quick updates from HarborCenter, where the Sabres practiced today before catching a flight to New York for Sunday’s tilt against the Islanders:

– Defenseman Josh Gorges won’t face any supplemental discipline for hitting Philadelphia’s Matt Read head-first into the corner boards late Friday, according to the Buffalo News.

Gorges was given a five-minute boarding major and ejected from the Sabres’ 3-1 win.

“From a couple of angles it doesn’t look great,” Gorges said. “Replaying it in my head, he kind of got the inside position and turned himself and turned himself to protect the puck. I tried to get on the other side of it. I gave him a little push, but I didn’t think I tried to go through him or put him in a vulnerable position.”

– Center Ryan O’Reilly earned a maintenance day after skating 26 minutes, three seconds and scoring a goal and three points Friday.

Coach Dan Bylsma had to tell O’Reilly, who a notoriously hard worker, to take the day off.

“He said he would’ve been all right if he had gone,” he said. “I said no.”

Bylsma said winger Tyler Ennis, sidelined by a lower-body injury for two games, will take the pregame warm-up Sunday. Ennis sat out practice. So did Jamie McGinn, who had a maintenance day.
