Reports: Sabres place Jean-Sebastien Dea on waivers

The Buffalo Sabres placed forward Jean-Sebastien Dea on waivers today, according to reports.

Dea, 26, is entering the second season of a two-year, one-way contract worth $1.4 million.

The Sabres, of course, would probably like to shed Dea’s $700,000 salary. Teams have until noon Tuesday to claim him.

If Dea stays in the organization, he is expected to provide depth, perhaps on the new taxi squad the NHL has implemented because of the COVID-19 pandemic or with the Rochester Americans.

Dea enjoyed a strong season with the Amerks last year, leading the AHL affiliate in both goals (15) and points (39) in 57 games. He went pointless in three contests with the Sabres.

The AHL has targeted Feb. 5 to start its season. The Sabres, meanwhile, will open their training camp later this week.

Dea has also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils.

Update: Dea has cleared waivers, according to reports.

  1. You may want to write a future article that in order to bring help in NHL salary cap control, all NHL teams would be aloud to exempt or cancel only one guaranteed contract per year and that player would then be added to the up coming seasons list of free agents. This idea would benefit the runaway control of guaranteed contracts and keep all players continuing to play honest, as playing their best, while not becoming lazy players. I think that this tool for ownership would even make the great game of NHL hockey even better!
