Five ‘Sabres Classics’ from 2006 series against Hurricanes to air next week

Five more “Sabres Classics” – this time games from Buffalo’s wild Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 – will be rebroadcast on MSG next week.

After defeating the Ottawa Senators, the Sabres fell one game short of reaching the Stanley Cup final, losing an ultra-tight seven-game series to the Hurricanes.

The games are being aired because the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NHL to suspend its season indefinitely March 12.

The contests will start at 8 p.m.

The complete schedule:

Monday, April 20: Sabres win opener

Jay McKee’s third-period goal held up as the winner in a 3-2 victory on May 20, 2006.

Tuesday, April 21: Sabres regain series lead

After the Hurricanes won Game 2, Daniel Briere scored twice in a 4-3 victory on May 24, 2006.

Wednesday, April 22: Sabres blow lead, lose in overtime

The Hurricanes erased a 3-1 deficit and won 4-3 on May 28, 2006, putting the Sabres on the brink of elimination.

Thursday, April 23: Sabres tie series

Briere’s overtime time goal secured a 2-1 win on May 30, 2006, forcing a Game 7 in Carolina.

Friday, April 24: Hurricanes win series

The Sabres, whose defense corps was ravaged by injuries, began the third period up 2-1 but lost 4-2 on June 1, 2006. Only two regular defensemen – Brian Campbell and Toni Lydman – were healthy for Game 7.
