Chad Johnson giving Sabres chance to win; Cody Franson day-to-day

BUFFALO – The numbers lie. In five games this season, Sabres goalie Chad Johnson has accumulated some below-average statistics – 1-4 with a 2.70 goals-against average and a .896 save percentage – subbing for injured starter Robin Lehner.

Still, Johnson, 29, has given the 1-4 Sabres “a chance to win every game he’s played,” coach Dan Bylsma said this afternoon.

“I don’t know if you can ask for much more from him,” Bylsma said following practice inside the First Niagara Center. “Going over each game that he has played, I say he’s made some strong saves, he’s been solid.”

The Sabres haven’t won because they can’t score. They have only nine goals this season, just 1.8 a game, 25th in the NHL.

Check back later for more on the Sabres’ scoring woes.

In injury news, Bylsma said defenseman Cody Franson is day-to-day and had a maintenance day from practice with an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, defenseman Zach Bogosian (lower body) is working out off the ice. Bogosian was injured early in training camp and practiced once last week.

Another defenseman injured early in camp, Bobby Sanguinetti, is also doing off-ice work and rehab skating, Bylsma said.
