Bruins sign former Sabres captain Brian Gionta to one-year contract

BUFFALO – The Boston Bruins today signed former Sabres captain Brian Gionta to a one-year contact worth a prorated $700,000.

Gionta, 39, passed on NHL opportunities before the season so he could represent Team USA at the Pyeongchang Games, his second Olympics. The Greece native captained the Americans to a seventh-place finish.

Gionta spent three years with the Sabres, scoring 40 goals and 103 points in 230 games. The winger has compiled 289 goals and 588 points in 1,006 NHL appearances.

The Sabres host the Bruins tonight. There’s no word yet on whether Gionta, who wanted to return to Buffalo this season, will play.
