Sabres to waive Matt Moulson for assignment

BUFFALO – The Sabres will waive Matt Moulson at noon today for the purpose of an assignment, effectively ending the graying winger’s career here.

The Sabres announced the move in a one-sentence press release this morning. If Moulson, 34, clears, he will likely be assigned to the Rochester Americans. Moulson hasn’t played in the AHL since 2008-09.

Given Moulson’s in the fourth year of a five-year, $25 million contract, he will almost certainly pass through. Moulson has scored only 35 goals in 253 games since signing the deal.

The three-time 30-goal scorer has zero points and a minus-9 rating this season.

Moulson’s lack of speed has hurt him in recent seasons, and he has mostly skated sparingly on the fourth line this season when he’s not a healthy scratch.

The Sabres recently gave him another chance to play after sitting out, but they scratched him again for Saturday’s 5-1 loss in Pittsburgh.

The Sabres also recalled forward Evan Rodrigues this morning and sent center Kyle Criscuolo to the Amerks.

  1. Terrible signing for Buffalo, like so many others. Trade Eichel, Kane, both goalies, Okposo, and take that cash and build a winner. Eichel is a whiney ginger who is so immature.
