Sabres tough guy John Scott on Bruins’ Shawn Thornton: ‘An honorable guy’

BUFFALO – Sabres tough guy John Scott said he had the same reaction as everyone else after watching Boston enforcer Shawn Thornton slew-foot and attack Pittsburgh’s Brooks Orpik on Saturday.

“It was just kind of not like Shawn Thornton, who’s an honorable guy, good guy,” Scott said this morning after the Sabres prepared for the Bruins inside the First Niagara Center. “I think he probably just got caught up in the moment. I was actually surprised it happened.”

Thornton won’t face Scott and the Sabres tonight. He’s appealing his 15-game suspension.

“Hopefully, it goes well,” Scott said about the appeal. “I just hope he gets what he deserves.”

Scott, whose hit to Loui Eriksson’s head Oct. 23 earned him a seven-game ban, said it’s been “a hot year for suspensions so far.”

“It doesn’t seem like it’s stopping,” Scott said. “It’s just getting more and more. It’s one of those things. I don’t think you’re going to get rid of it totally. The players will adjust. There’s always going to be questionable hits. There’s always going to be a spot for players like me and Shawn to do our jobs.”

Interim Sabres coach Ted Nolan said Scott will be a game-time decision tonight.
