Sabres tinker with power play; Nikita Zadorov to return

BUFFALO – When your power play is operating at an NHL-worst 9 percent and has 11 goals all season, you better try something different.

So the Sabres tried something very different toward the end of today’s 90-minute practice, putting 6-foot-8 defenseman Tyler Myers in front of the net on the power play.

Why not, right? Boston often puts hulking defenseman Zdeno Chara in front.

“You put a big man there, you can draw a little bit more attention than trying to cover him on the point,” Sabres coach Ted Nolan said inside the First Niagara Center. “It takes two guys to cover him in front of the net. So maybe that’ll spark our power play a little bit.”

The Sabres desperately need some offense. They have only 76 goals all season and have scored just nine times during their eight-game losing streak.

In other news, Nolan said defenseman Nikita Zadorov will return Thursday against Minnesota after sitting two games as a healthy scratch.

“Sometimes it’s good to sit back and watch and observe,” Nolan said.

Nolan said winger Chris Stewart (flu) will also play. The Sabres haven’t sent anyone down yet. Nolan said a couple of other players aren’t feeling well.

Goalie Jhonas Enroth will start Thursday, Nolan said.

  1. Love Nikita and please continue to hit hard, but he’s got to learn how to keep his trap shut and not call the first place team that can score on the Sabres at will “soft.”
