Sabres sign Tobias Rieder to one-year contract

More than three hours after free agency opened, new Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams has added his first player, signing winger Tobias Rieder to a one-year, $700,000 contract, according to The Score’s John Matisz and The Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski.

Update: The Sabres have officially announced the deal.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Rieder, 27, scored four goals and 10 points in 55 games with the Calgary Flames last season. He also scored three short-handed goals in 10 playoff contests.

Rieder will likely skate on the third or fourth line and kill penalties for the Sabres, whose penalty killing ranked 30th last season. He played for Sabres coach Ralph Krueger on Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

The German has compiled 59 goals, 138 points and 50 penalty minutes in 434 career NHL contests. He has also played for the Arizona Coyotes, Los Angles Kings and Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers drafted Rieder in the fourth round in 2011, 114th overall, before trading him to Arizona in 2013. The Oilers brought him back in 2018, and he recorded zero goals and 11 assists for them two years ago.
