Sabres’ Evan Rodrigues, Jake McCabe out with injuries

BUFFALO – The Sabres could start the regular season without two regulars, center Evan Rodrigues and defenseman Jake McCabe.

Rodrigues suffered a hand injury in Friday’s 3-0 loss in Toronto when Maple Leafs forward Andreas Borgman crunched him into boards, Sabres coach Phil Housley said. He had no timetable for a return.

“That’s as much as I know right now,” Housley said of the injury today following practice inside HarborCenter.

McCabe, meanwhile, is week-to-week with an upper-body injury, Housley said. Still, he wouldn’t rule McCabe out of the season opener Oct. 5. McCabe was possibly hurt Friday.

“We’ll know more as the days go by,” Housley said.

In other injury news, Housley said rookies Sean Malone (undisclosed) and Alexander Nylander (lower body) are “making headway.” The forwards have missed all of training camp. Malone has started skating, Housley said.

“I know it’s tough on those guys,” he said. “You come into camp and you want to make a good impression. You take a step back, it’s unfortunate.”

Housley on top defense prospect Brendan Guhle, 20, who was assigned to the Rochester Americans on Sunday: “From prospects camp to main camp to exhibition games, you could see the pace was getting faster and faster. There’s not a lot of time. He’s got to get more comfortable with himself.

“We talked to him just about going down and developing. There’s plenty of good players down there (in the AHL) … respect it, because there’s good hockey.”
