Sabres’ Conor Sheary practices; Scott Wilson leaves with injury

BUFFALO – Just as one Sabres winger, Conor Sheary, returned from an injury today, they lost another one.

Toward of the end of practice inside HarborCenter, Scott Wilson got tangled with defensemen Rasmus Ristolainen and appeared to injure his right leg. Wilson stayed on the ice for a couple of minutes before being helped off. He couldn’t put any pressure on his right foot.

Sabres coach Phil Housley did not have an update on Wilson, who’s expected to occupy a spot on the fourth line.

“It’s way too early,” Housley said.

Following a day off Saturday, the Sabres returned with a healthier and smaller roster. Justin Bailey and Nick Baptiste cleared waivers today, meaning they will likely assign the 23-year-old wingers to the Rochester Americans soon. Neither practiced today.

Update: The Sabres have assigned Bailey and Baptiste to the Amerks.

“It’s unfortunate,” Housley said of the youngsters getting waived. “We have a lot of new players, a lot of young players.”

Housley said he plans to talk to them today.

Meanwhile, defenseman Matt Tennyson also cleared waivers, although he is still with the Sabres.

“The plan right now is just to have some bodies up here for practice, see where that takes us,” Housley said. “We got to err on (the side of) caution with Risto and (Marco Scandella). It’s good to have D.”

Ristolainen, Scandella and center Jack Eichel, who all missed practice late last week and Friday’s preseason finale, skated with the team today.

However, defenseman Zach Bogosian and center Johan Larsson both missed the session. Housley said they’re day-to-day with lower-body injuries. Defenseman Brandon Hickey has also been sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

The Sabres have 28 players left in training camp. They need to pare the roster down to 23 in the coming days. They open the season Thursday against the Boston Bruins.

Sheary, who said he aggravated an upper-body injury the first day of camp, thinks he could be ready for the opener.

“As long as everything trends that way, I think it should be a possibility,” he said.

Check back later for more on Sheary, who skated at left wing today beside Casey Mittelstadt and Tage Thompson.
