Sabres add forward depth, sign John Hayden to one-year contract

The Sabres added more depth to their bottom-six forward group today, signing John Hayden to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

Hayden, 26, is the ninth player the Sabres have inked since free agency opened Wednesday.

The 6-foot-3, 223-pound Hayden spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes, recording two goals and five points in 29 games.

Hayden has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils, compiling 13 goals and 31 points in 185 contests. The Blackhawks drafted him in the third round in 2013, 74th overall.

Prior to spending four seasons at Yale, Hayden played for Sabres coach Don Granato with the United States National Team Development Program and with the Blackhawks.

  1. I live in Arizona and follow the hockey team here and have never even heard of this guy. Just my own thoughts but Buffalo is adding a lot of low-priced, bottom-tier players who will be playing FT roles v. being backups on other teams. Seems to me that Buffalo will be in the running for another very high draft position next year.
