NHL Draft Tracker: Sabres take Matthew Savoie ninth overall, Noah Ostlund 16th

MONTREAL – The Buffalo Sabres tonight selected Matthew Savoie, a center with the Western Hockey League’s Winnipeg Ice, ninth overall at the NHL Draft.

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Savoie compiled 35 goals and 90 points in 65 games last season.

“My offensive abilities, my skating ability, I think is what makes me stand out as a player,” Savoie said at the NHL Scouting Combine last month in Buffalo.” I think I have good vision in the offensive zone and can make plays. I’m always looking for whoever has the best chance to score. I think those are my biggest assets as a player.”

Savoie, 18, played for three teams in 2020-21: Winnipeg, the United States Hockey League’s Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Sherwood Park Crusaders.

Savoie, 18, was coached in Winnipeg by former Sabres defenseman and assistant coach James Patrick.

Update: The Sabres tonight drafted Noah Ostlund, a Swedish center with Djurgardens IF, 16th overall.

The 5-foot-10, 164-pound Ostlund, 18, compiled nine goals and 42 points in 32 games with Djurgardens’ junior team last season and zero points in 11 outings with their big club.

Stay tuned for updates. The Sabres also have the 16th and 28th picks tonight.
