Hurricanes sign Nathan Gerbe to two-way contract

BUFFALO – Former Sabres winger Nathan Gerbe has found a new home after getting waived and bought out earlier this month.

The Carolina Hurricanes today signed the 26-year-old American to a one-year, two-way deal. Gerbe receives $550,000 in the NHL, $150,000 in the AHL and is guaranteed at least $250,000, the Hurricanes said.

According to capgeek.com, the Sabres also owe Gerbe $616,666 over the next two years, part of the three-year, $4.3 million contract he inked in 2011.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said earlier this month Gerbe’s agent expressed concern to the team last season about the opportunity he was receiving. Following two healthy scratches in March, Gerbe told the Times Herald he needed “minutes to play better.”

Gerbe, a prolific NCAA and AHL scorer, compiled only five goals and 10 points in 42 games last season while averaging 12:30 each contest. He has 29 goals and 72 points in 188 NHL games.
