Five ‘Sabres Classics,’ including win after Flight 3407 crash, to air

Five more “Sabres Classics” – this time an array of regular-season and exhibition games from the franchise’s 50-year history – will be rebroadcast on MSG next week.

The games are being aired because the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NHL to suspend its season indefinitely March 12.

The contests will start at 8 p.m.

The complete schedule:

Monday, May 18: Sabres win emotional shootout over San Jose Sharks

A day after Continental Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center, the Sabres blew a 3-1 lead before roaring back to beat the Sharks 6-5 in a shootout on Feb. 13, 2009 in Buffalo. Jason Pominville scored the tying goal with four seconds left in regulation.

Tuesday, May 19: Sabres defeat Atlanta Thrashers in Terry Pegula’s first game as owner

In its final appearance weeks before Rick Martin’s death, the legendary French Connection line surprised Pegula during a pregame ceremony on Feb. 23, 2011. The Sabres then beat the Thrashers 4-1.

Wednesday, May 20: Alexander Mogilny hits 50-goal mark

Mogilny reached the milestone in only his 46th game, a 3-2 win over the Hartford Whalers on Feb. 3, 1993.

Thursday, May 21: Sabres throttle Soviet Wings

The Sabres won 12-6 on Jan 7, 1976, becoming the first NHL team to defeat a club from the USSR.

Friday, May 22: Sabres defeat another Soviet team

The Sabres beat Central Red Army 6-1 on Jan. 3, 1980.
