Mattias Samuelsson skates with Sabres, nearing return from injury

BUFFALO – On some teams, injured players are rarely seen. They do their work before many of their teammates arrive at the rink and quietly leave.

Then there’s Mattias Samuelsson. For more than three weeks, as the Sabres defenseman has rehabbed from a lower-body injury he suffered Oct. 22, he remained a visible presence in the dressing room and during practice.

“You saw him every day sitting on the bench in practice and around ... Read the full article

Sabres recall forwards from Amerks

BUFFALO – The Sabres this morning recalled forwards Anders Bjork and Riley Sheahan, both of whom started the season in the NHL but did not play, from the Rochester Americans.

The Sabres, having lost captain Kyle Okposo (lower body) and rookie Jack Quinn (undisclosed) to injuries, had only 11 healthy forwards. They host the Vancouver Canucks tonight at KeyBank Center.

Bjork, 26, and Sheahan, 30, both cleared waivers earlier this season.... Read the full article

Sabres notes: Buffalo adds defenseman; Jacob Bryson seizing leading role

BUFFALO – Just nine games in, the Sabres have already dipped deep into their defense reserves. Hours before Monday’s 8-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings, they recalled Jeremy Davies from the Rochester Americans.

Davies, 25, is the ninth defenseman who has been on the roster this season.

“We’re banged up on the back end and that’s the need, pressing need right now,” Sabres coach Don Granato said Monday prior to Davies’ recall.

“We’re banged up on the back end and that’s the need, pressing need right now,” Sabres coach Don Granato said this morning.

Right now, having lost three defensemen – Henri Jokiharju, Ilya Lyubushkin and Mattias Samuelsson are all injured – the Sabres sorely help.

Peyton Krebs, Jack Quinn and other Sabres making best of rotation

BUFFALO – For two recent games, Sabres winger Peyton Krebs sat in the press box in his suit and tie scribbling notes as he watched the action unfold below him.

Krebs, 21, enjoyed regular duty as last season progressed, playing 48 times and establishing himself as a member of the Sabres’ talented young core.

But right now, even after waiving Riley Sheahan on Sunday, the Sabres still have 13 healthy forwards, meaning one must sit ... Read the full article

If Sheahan, 30, clears, he could be assigned to the Rochester Americans.

The 6-foot-2, 214-pound Sheahan has been serving as the Sabres’ 14th forward since recovering from a muscle injury. They could use his roster spot to recall a defenseman.... Read the full article

Sabres place Anders Bjork on waivers

BUFFALO – The Sabres on Monday placed forward Anders Bjork, a healthy scratch both games this season, on waivers, according to reports.

Bjork, 26, lost his spot in the lineup late last season and never regained it, sitting out more than a month straight.

This year, the American had an underwhelming training camp, and he never appeared to be close to cracking the forward corps.

With forward Riley Sheahan ready to be activated from ... Read the full article

For Sabres goalie Eric Comrie, a chance to start materializes in Buffalo

BUFFALO – Following an eight-day rest, goalie Eric Comrie will likely make his Sabres debut this afternoon, the first of perhaps 50 starts he could earn this season.

The Sabres awarded Craig Anderson, 41, Thursday’s season opener, and the veteran enjoyed a terrific night, stopping 35 shots in a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

This season, however, the Sabres expect Comrie, 27, to emerge as their No. 1 goalie. Having established himself as ... Read the full article

Sabres notes: Victor Olofsson earns spot on first line after fast finish

BUFFALO – As Victor Olofsson’s goal drought dragged on last season, Sabres coach Don Granato began offering some insight into why the winger suddenly stopped scoring.

Olofsson, Granato explained, was battling a soft issue injury – it turned out to be his wrist – that hampered his shooting, his greatest asset. He would massage the puck, and that extra split-second allowed the goalie to catch up.

“He was frustrated and very down because he couldn’t ... Read the full article

At 41, Sabres’ Craig Anderson receives coveted opening night assignment

BUFFALO – In Craig Anderson, Sabres coach Don Granato sees a passionate veteran goalie who understands the end is nearing.

“Craig is a guy that’s very connected to his love of the game, and he sees, hey, my career’s coming to an end, I’m clear and definitively going to miss this, so I’m going to love what I’m going to miss,” Granato said after the Sabres prepared for tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators ...
