Amerks sign Matt Ellis to AHL deal

BUFFALO – Matt Ellis will be back for an eighth season with the Sabres organization.

The Rochester Americans signed the popular forward to a one-year AHL contract today. The respected 33-year-old, a veteran of 356 NHL games, spent parts of two seasons as Amerks captain before getting recalled. He could wear the ‘C’ in 2015-16.

Ellis has split the last three seasons between Buffalo and Rochester, playing 95 games in each league. He started the last two seasons in the AHL before earning regular NHL duty. Ellis had one goal and two points in 39 NHL contests last season.

The Sabres originally acquired Ellis off waivers from Los Angeles during the 2008 preseason. He carved out a regular role later that season and in 2009-10 and 2011-12. In between, he captained the Sabres’ old affiliate, the Portland Pirates.

Ellis has 21 goals and 49 NHL points.

  1. So glad he’s staying in the organization. Love seeing him play. No player to ever play the game has had this guys work ethic and a total class act and great great guy. Hope he gets back in blue and gold on the fourth line. Congrats to a great guy.
